The Yellow Card training program has been designed for people needing to develop the skills and knowledge required to operate elevating work platforms (commonly known as EWP’s) that do not require a Licence to perform high risk work.
A Licence to perform high risk work is a Worksafe requirement for boom-type EWP’s that go above 11m. As there are numerous EWP’s that do not require this type of licence, in particular scissor lifts of any height, it does not mean training is not required to operate them, this is where the yellow card meets your duty of care.
WHY DO I NEED A YELLOW CARD?
Every State and Territory in Australia has in place an Occupational Health and Safety Act (OH&S) or has adopted the new Work Health and Safety Act 2011, which aims to protect the health, safety, and welfare of people at work. In these Acts, it is clearly stated that there is a duty of care to ensure workplace safety.
EWP’s that do not require a Licence to perform high risk are all very different in use and safe operation. The EWPA ‘Yellow Card’ was developed by the EWPA in consultation with members and the industry. The intention of this program is to assist operators, employers, equipment owners, and manufacturers to comply with the OHS / WHS regulations.
The ‘Yellow Card’ provides evidence that the operators of specific types of EWP’s have been trained in the safe use of that machine.
The operators, employers, equipment owners, and manufacturers all have documentary evidence of the training received. This can be verified on the EWPA website.
